The best way to explore the beautiful Islands of Andaman and Nicobar is by renting a bike. You will find a lot of bike and car rental services in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Most people rent a bike in Port Blair when they land at the Airport to travel around and explore the local markets places in the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Island. The next famous destination where many tourists prefer renting a bike is Havelock Island. Havelock Island is a small and beautiful Y-shaped Island where you can travel everywhere on your bike.
One of the reasons why people rent a bike in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is for the ease of travel. If you have your own vehicle your travel plan does not get affected by the fact that you find public transport or a cab. Getting public transport or a cab can be very expensive on the Island and they may charge you more as you are a tourist and do not know the locality. This is the reason you should consider renting a bike not only in Andaman and Nicobar Island but everywhere possible on your journey. You can even rent a car if you have a large family.
We rented bikes on Port Blair and Havelock Island. During our stay in Port Blair, we contacted the bike rental service through the owner of the homestay, most hotels and homestays have contact information about the bike rental services and some hotels even have their own bikes for rent to their customers. So, we contacted the rental service. They came to the place where we were staying with two bikes and four helmets. Rules are very strictly followed in the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Island and helmets are compulsory for both the person riding the bike and the person sitting in the backseat.
Now, the important thing you need to know about renting a bike is to carry your driving license and an additional ID card with you on your travel journey. They will take a note of your driving license details and keep your additional ID with them as collateral. They may also ask you for a deposit in case you cause damage to the bike. Please make a short video and take photos of the bike from different angles to avoid getting into an argument with the rental service guys about the damage you caused to their bike. Without a driving license, they may hesitate and not rent you a bike, so you can say that a driving license is a mandatory document for renting a bike.
In Port Blair, we rented two Honda Activa each for Rs. 500 per day and we paid Rs. 3000 as a deposit amount which we received back while returning the bike. The first thing you should do after renting a bike is fill in the petrol as they completely drain the petrol from the tank and then rent you the bike. You get petrol at a discounted price on this Island as compared to your hometown. During our visit in October 2021 petrol was Rs. 90 per liter in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
On Havelock Island, we decided to rent a bike from the Jetty itself as our hotel was far from the Jetty. We traveled from Port Blair to Havelock Island on a private ferry named Makruzz and once we reached the Island just outside of the Jetty there were a lot of bike rental services. We rented two Honda Dio each for Rs. 300 per day and we paid Rs. 2000 as a deposit amount. We realized that the rates are not fixed and you can get a bike at a discount by bargaining. If you have good bargaining skills then you can rent a bike at a discounted price. Here at the rental service, the person asked for Rs. 500 for renting a bike per day and we bargained a lot and got the price down to Rs. 300 per day.
