Best places to visit in Chandigarh in one day

The union territory of Chandigarh is the capital of the two northern states: Punjab and Haryana. In 1947 after the partition of Lahore, the capital city of Punjab became part of Pakistan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru proposed to build a new and modern city to be acted as the capital of Punjab. Chandigarh was the dream city of India post-independence and was designed by famous Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier. In this article, I will share the best places to visit in Chandigarh in one day, so let's get started.

1) The Rock Garden

Rock Garden is a beautiful place to visit where all sculptures are made of different waste materials like rocks, scrap, glass, pots, broken pipes, electrical waste and much more. It is open everyday from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm. You have to pay an entry fee to visit here, which is Rs. 10 for children and Rs.30 for an adult. As a matter of fact, the famous Bollywood movie Shershah had some of its scenes shot in Rock Garden. It is recommended to plan your visit early at Rock Garden to cover all sights as it is stretched over 40 acres and the walk is very time-consuming and exhausting. Bring enough food and water during your visit. There are food stalls there but are near the exit point, which is far away from the entry point.

2) Sukhna Lake

The lake of Sukhna by the foothills of Shivalik hills is an artificial lake covering an area of around 3 km. The view is amazing from the walking path along the shore. The garden is well maintained near the beach and there are a lot of food stalls with good food that you might want to try. People often come here for a walk and exercise, and many families visit to enjoy the scenic beauty of the lake in the evening. Recently Sukhna Lake was declared a living entity by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which means now it has the same rights as that of a living person. This step was taken to prevent the lake from pollution and save it from extinction.

You might probably be exhausted by visiting these two sites as The Rock Garden is stretched at a  long distance and you are required to walk a lot. The same goes with Sukhna lake, and you will have to walk along the shore for a long time. You will definitely enjoy it here but will probably call it a day for traveling. If this is not the case and time permits, you can visit a few more places like;

1) Leisure Valley

2) Terraced Garden

3) Zakir Hussain Rose Garden

4) Japanese Garden

5) Le Corbusier Centre

6) Butterfly Park

7) Sector 17 Market for shopping enthusiast

8) Garden Of Fragrance, etc.
